Core-shell microspheres

Recently, core-shell microspheres (CSMs) have attracted attention as materials combining properties and functionalities of two or more substances. Among CSMs consisted of various combinations of substances, CSMs with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) as a shell layer have attractive characters such as unique morphologies, designed surface properties, large surface area and high light scattering property, and therefore could be applied in many fields such as electronics, optics, catalysis, cosmetics, etc. We demonstrate a facile preparation method of CSMs with a silica NPs shell layer.1),2) This method is based on modified suspension polymerization with polymerizable group-immobilized silica nanoparticles. The CSMs obtained by this method are characterized by a shell particles layer which were covalently embedded on the polymer microsphere surface.
